About Chapel Hill & Carrboro

Chapel Hill and Carrboro could be called "The Tale of Two Cities," but for the fact that they are not cities, but great towns inextricably linked by history and a thoroughfare that begins as Franklin Street and ends as Main Street. While they share roads, infrastructure, and the top performing school system in the state, each town possesses a distinct culture and character that very much sets them apart.

Carrboro

Originally a train depot for the growing university "up the street," Carrboro created its own identity as a textile town. This rich history is still reflected in the charm and warmth of the architecture that comprises its downtown area, and the mill district neighborhoods that grew up around it - now some of the most coveted places to live in town. If Carrboro were to define itself, the word progressive would be at the top of the list; progressive in policy, art, food, entertainment and environment.

Community lies at the heart of Carrboro's identity. It's a place where diversity is celebrated, and inclusivity is more than a buzzword—it's a way of life. The town's commitment to social activism is palpable. Whether it's a town hall meeting or a grassroots initiative, Carrboro's inhabitants are unafraid to voice their opinions and make a difference.

The town pulses with creative energy, evident in its numerous art galleries, live music venues, and local boutiques. In addition to hosting multiple art and music festivals throughout the year, it is also home to The Cat's Cradle, a nationally recognized music venue, The Carrboro Farmer's Market, and Weaver Street Market, affectionately called "The Weav," a local co-op grocery store with a "big front yard" serving as a gathering space for the local community.

Carrboro's commitment to local businesses has resulted in a flourishing downtown marked by award winning eateries, unique galleries and shops, and bars and lounges that range from hip to elegant. It's commitment to sustainability, the environment and well-being is reflected in the miles of greenway trails connected throughout town.

You may have to drive a little further to find the big box stores we all need on occasion, but if vibrant, progressive and unique are words that light you up, Carrboro's your place.

Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill, referred to as “The Southern Part of Heaven”, received the nickname by author William Meade Prince. Meade was sharing a story about a local who, when answering what heaven must be like replied, “I believe Heaven must be a lot like Chapel Hill in the Spring.” There are truly few places as beautiful when the Dogwoods, Redbuds, Magnolias, and Cherry trees bloom.

This quintessential college town was created to serve the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The strong bond continues today, and each influences the other. Open, inclusive, vibrant, quaint, innovative and artistic come to mind when trying to capture the essence of Chapel Hill.

From the east end of Franklin Street to the west you'll find local coffee shops, James Beard award winning restaurants, independent book stores, cool bars, and local bakeries operating alongside Trader Joe's, Aldi, Starbucks, Silver Spot Cinemas, and The Shake Shack. It has a little bit of everything, but never too much of any one thing. Take an afternoon to peruse the Ackland Art Museum. Stop in the Morehead Planetarium, or enjoy an evening at the Carolina Performing Arts Center.

Fall football Saturdays offer local events open for the public to enjoy, in addition to watching a game in the beautiful Kenan Stadium. With November comes a gorgeous change of season and basketball. Spring comes early most of the time and with it, the ACC tournament and baseball games at Boshamer Stadium. Suffice it to say sports enthusiasts enjoy life in Chapel Hill.

Chapel Hill holds onto its history a bit more than Carrboro. It embraces change a little more slowly and with a little more resistance not because it dislikes change, but because it values the history upon which its progress has been built and wants to be sure to keep a little of both.
